Architecture + InteriorDesign

This condominium projectwas commissioned by a professional couple with grown children. The clients are collectors of sculpture, ceramics, and textiles. They entertain frequently. The house is located in the historic Back Bay neighborhood of Boston, Massachusetts. The building, constructedin 1872, was one of the first apartment residences in the US.The owners enthused about the location but needed professional design assistance to downsizefrom a substantial house in the suburbs and make the layout of this new homework for them.

The design solution is anappreciative reference to history while creating contemporary moments in thenewly conceived areas. The entry was reconfigured to create better flow intothe apartment. New wood flooring wasrequired in the living and dining rooms but existing flooring was restored inall other areas. Wallswere moved to create an enticing entry sequence with substantial storage and apartition wall was relocated to create a larger guest bedroom.

Bespoke millwork adds focusto the entry into the living room. Elegant cabinetry holds part of the client's library and provides areasof display and storage for some of their art collection. A bar with a small seating area wasintroduced here. One enters the livingroom through the welcoming portal of this new library.

A new doorincised into the opposite wall of the living room accommodates flow through to the dining room. New furniture and a lighting plan for thefull apartment was commissioned and designed by the architect.

An outdated kitchen was re-designed as an efficient chef's kitchen with cabinetry designed to maximize useful storage space. Custom tile was created to serve as a counterpoint to the sleek new kitchen.

Renderings were generated using representations ofsome major pieces of furniture and artwork to help the owners visualize theirnew home.
